Every Friday and Saturday, a lot of people in Cagayan de Oro join the “Night Cafe” activities. The event is a weekly festival celebrating life and friendship of Kagayanons. Vendors are all over the area in Divisoria, showcasing their products to the public.
One of the most popular food stalls is the one selling cheesecake. Unlike an ordinary cheesecake, however, they’re selling one that isn’t even baked. It’s made of flour, cheese and white sugar fried in a pan.
I never knew about this delicious snack until a friend of mine who lives in the city introduced it to me. We ordered one layer made of four triangular slices. It was freshly cooked right in front of us!I carefully observed as the lady vendor made that one layer. She poured mixed ingredients of flour and butter in the pan then added the grated cheese, sprinkled sugar on top and folded the cooked product in half.
I got my first slice and excitedly took my first bite. I loved cheeses and it perfectly suited my taste! Though it was a bit oily, it tasted better than I thought it would. The blend of sugar and cheese was awesome. It was certainly the best cheesecake I’ve ever had!
One slice is definitely not enough.
Whenever I visit the city now, I always find time to go back and enjoy another cheesecake bite. As far as I know, it is only available in Cagayan de Oro (like binaki?). I’m hoping that someday, the seller will try to make it readily available all over the country.
For all cheesecake lovers, the fried cheesecake from Cagayan is definitely a must-try!
